Jade Hannah: Fashion Sunseeker Swimwear

I began casting for this project a week before the shoot date. A tight deadline, but not an uncommon one. In looking for a new makeup artist, I went through a school, Face Stockholm, which has some really great students and alumni whom I've worked with in the past.

For this shoot, we planned out three basic looks that were clean, summery and matched the colors of the bathing suits. Thanks to the portability of my lighting kit, we were able to shoot inside my office against a wall that had a pattern I thought would go well with these bathing suits.

For my main light, I set up a Large (7 foot) OctoDome attached to a Photoflex TritonFlash head and positioned it straight on to illuminate the model with soft, even light. I then attached another TritonFlash head to a Small (3 foot) OctoDome and secured it to a boom. This light would serve as a top/hair light.

Here's a quick behind-the-scenes video of me setting up the lights:

Contrary to many portrait shooters, I like to shoot with very small apertures to ensure sharp focus in every area of my frames. It's an aesthetic that I think lends itself well to the world of fashion photography. And while there was not a lot of depth in this shot to warrant such a small aperture, I still set my aperture to f/16, mainly out of routine. Shooting at small apertures like this, however, requires that I have a significant amount of light output. Fortunately, the TritonFlashes, with their 300 watt/second output, are up to the task. These were my camera settings for this shoot:

Camera: Nikon D3
Lens: Nikkor 24-70mm, f/2.8
Focal length: approx. 38mm
Aperture: f/16
Shutter/sync speed: 1/125th of a second
ISO: 280

I set the power on the Large OctoDome to full power, but I didn't need that much for the top/hair light, which I set to 1/16th power. These are my go-to lights, as they're powerful, lightweight, and can be used anywhere, since they're powered by long-lasting lithium-ion batteries. Makes my job a lot easier!

Why include the pipes in the shots, spoils them for me.
