Jay P. Morgan: Mixing HMI and LED Lights

Recently, Jay P. Morgan and The Slanted Lens crew produced a vintage train station shoot at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California. Since they were shooting both stills and video, they needed to use continuous lights and Jay P. decided to use a mix of HMI and NorthStar™ Lite LED (both daylight-balanced).     For this The Slanted Lens piece, we shot out at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California. They generously gave us access to their steam train and World War II passenger cars. We used this setting to look at the process of...

Tim Snow: Portraits of a Chiropractor

Mixing your artificial light source with ambient light is a great way to draw the eye to your subject. One of my favorite challenges as a photographer is showing up to a location I have never seen, assessing the situation, and making some great photographs in a short period of time. Renée Dallaire is a Pointe-Claire, Quebec, based chiropractor who was in need of some new photographs for her website. She had initially contacted me asking to make some portraits and to photograph her newly-renovated reception area and consultation rooms. After speaking with her and discussing her needs,...

George Simian: On the street with Portable Lighting Gear

Los Angeles' "Arts District", a large neighborhood of abandoned warehouses and industrial lofts, just East of Downtown, has blossomed into the visual center of the film and graphic-arts world (and is rapidly gentrifying with condos and cafes). Many of its walls are covered with highly creative murals - most put up illegally, before City Hall finally acknowledged their artistic value, and repealed the regulations that criminalized outdoor wall painting! Just before sunset one day, we took a short walk and shot some test photos for a future workshop in front of a few different murals. It was a very fast, ...

Blair Bunting: Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari

[This is an authorized reposting on Blair Bunting's original post.] For those close to me, you know how much Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident and subsequent critical condition has affected me. He is one of my heroes, and my family are of the many Ferrari tifosi (fans) that have cheered him on through the years. Like so many around the world, we continue pray for his recovery in this dark time. When word came that his 1998 F1 car was in Scottsdale for an auction, I quit everything I was doing and started to call every contact I had...

Jay P. Morgan: Balancing Light Bulbs with Strobes

Trevor Sherwin: Photographing The Masai Tribe in Kenya

Recently, Pro Showcase photographer Trevor Sherwin produced a video about a series of portraits he made while on vacation in Kenya. In it, Trevor reveals the gear and techniques he used to create these images, including how he was able to sync his TritonFlash strobe (technique will work with any strobe) at 1/6400th of a second!   Masai People Lighting Tutorial Video from PhotoTraining on Vimeo. I found myself in Kenya just outside Masai Mara National Park, and as a portrait photographer, I am drawn much more to people than animals. So it was only natural that I find a...

Robert Trawick: Saturday Night Lights

Oklahoma City photographer Robert Trawick recently held a presentation at the DFW PhotoExpo in Dallas/Forth Worth, Texas and then went the extra mile by inviting attendees to join him for a night shot later that evening. Here is his account: I’m honored to have an opportunity to present to fellow photographers, but I was super stoked to return to DFW PhotoExpo for another year. It’s hard to develop a relationship and understanding with another photographer during a one hour presentation, so I love to invite them out for a live shoot after the trade show...

Horror Lighting - Photography and Video Tutorial

Today on the Slanted Lens we are here with a few scary characters from a B-movie. We will be looking at how to create lighting for a horror photo shoot in the woods. This was a difficult shoot for many reasons. We were off in the woods, away from the road and had to carry all the equipment and generators to location. There was poison oak at the location and a lot of make-up needed to be done. We also struggled with smoke as the shoot progressed because the wind was carrying it into the wrong direction. Teri Groves did...
