DualFlash Hardware Product Spotlight

Lighting Equipment

New for 2009! The DualFlash is a studio accessory that allows you to expand your capabilities for creative photography.

This lesson will introduce you to this product and explain how to setup the hardware with an umbrella and a soft box.

The DualFlash Hardware [AC-DUALSMKT] is designed for use with umbrellas or soft boxes, dramatically improving the quality of light to flatter your subject. The unit includes four shoe mounts: two for flashes and two for mounting wireless triggers. This hardware will allow users to increase power by using two flash units simultaneously. Users can also increase flash recycle time by using two flashes at half power rather than one at full power. Features an umbrella insert for simple and fast connection to umbrellas.

Topics Covered:

  •     Instructions for assembling the DualFlash Hardware for use with an umbrella
  •     Instructions for assembling the DualFlash Hardware for use with a soft box

Camera/Media

  •     Off-Camera Shoe Mount Flashes
  •     Wireless Triggers

Using two shoe flashes will either double the light output, or allow you to turn down the power on each flash to get a faster recycle time acting like a faster recycling single flash at full power. This unique design includes extra shoe mounts, allowing the attachment of shoe mount-style radio remote receivers. This allows you the ability to move freely around your set while shooting, rather than being tethered to your triggers or flashes.

The DualFlash Hardware is an all-aluminum design with a hard anodized finish. It measures 8 x 8 x 2” and weights 1.6 lbs. (20.3 x 20.3 x 5 cm and .725kg).

The DualFlash Hardware is available as an adapter kit that includes the Photoflex Heavy-Duty Swivel [AC-ALSWMTB] for attachment to a light stand and to facilitate tilting the unit for the optimum angle.

Assembly for use with an Umbrella

1. Installing the Upper and Lower Umbrella Mounting Shaft

The T-shaped plate has a 3/8” hole in it; insert the lower umbrella shaft through the hole. [figure 1]

Figure 1

The upper umbrella shaft has a 3/8” female tapped base that will allow it to screw onto the male end of the lower umbrella shaft. Hand tighten them together making sure that the umbrella mounting hole at the top of the upper shaft is positioned so that when the umbrella is assembled to it the flash units will face the umbrella. [figure 2]

Figure 2

A screwdriver may be used to provide additional leverage in tightening the upper and lower shaft together. [figure 3]

2. Installing the Heavy-Duty Swivel Stand Mount

Place the aluminum swivel on the top stud of your LiteStand and securely tighten in place. [figure 4]

3. Installing an Umbrella

Loosen the umbrella set screw at the top of the umbrella shaft and insert the shaft of your umbrella through the mounting hole. Tighten the setscrew securely on the umbrella shaft. [figure 6]

4. Installing Shoe Mount Flash Units

Make sure that the cold shoe mounts are securely attached to the two ends of the T plate via their aluminum thumbscrew through the bottom of the T plate. Slide your flash unit onto the cold shoe and securely tighten the setscrew on the cold shoe. Always make sure that not only is the cold shoe set screw tightened onto the shoe plate of the flash unit but also be sure that you secure it with the flash units lever or tightening ring. [figure 7]

5. Installing a Wireless Receiver

Wireless receivers can be used to trigger the flash units. Some units will have a strap for hanging them on the hardware or in some cases they can slide onto the provided shoe mounts. [figure 9]

Assembly for use with a Soft Box

Follow the steps detailed in above umbrella assembly directions step 1 in reverse and remove the upper and lower umbrella shafts and set aside. You will not need them.

1. Installing Male & Female Brass Soft Box Mounting Studs

One end of the T plate has a ¼” hole in it; insert the small threaded male end of the male stud through the hole. [figure 10]

Figure 10

Screw the female tapped corresponding end of the female brass stud to the male threads of the male stud and tighten securely. Pliers may be required to tighten securely. [figure 11]

2. Connecting the Stud Receiver to the Reflector Connector

The stud receiver has a 3/8” threaded shaft that will fit any of the large tapped holes on the circumference of the reflector connector (Item SC-B9108DSM) sold separately. Hand-tighten together securely. The reflector connector is a valuable accessory to purchase for use with soft boxes as it will help eliminate light spill out the back of the soft box.[figures 12 and 13]

3. Soft Box Assembly with the Reflector Connector

Following the standard assembly procedure as detailed in the instructions included with your soft box; insert the flexible steel rods of the soft box into the receiver holes on the outside circumference of the reflector connector. Insert one rod then the next one diagonally across from it and so on. [figure 14]

Figure 14

The soft box is now assembled. Note that the position of the stud receiver will determine whether the soft box will be in a vertical or horizontal position when in use. [figure 15] Also note that the interior baffle diffusion of the soft box must be removed to allow room for the hardware and flash assembly inside the soft box.

4. Installing Hardware to the Assembled Soft Box

As detailed above in the umbrella assembly step 2 place the Heavy-Duty Swivel onto your LiteStand and tighten the setscrew securely. Then set the brass stud of the hardware assembly into the swivel. [figure 16]

Figure 16

Place the stud receiver of the soft box assembly onto the brass stud of hardware now sitting on the Heavy-Duty Swivel. Make sure that the hardware is extending inside the soft box. [figure 17]

Always make sure that not only is the cold shoe setscrew tightened onto the shoe plate of the flash unit but also be sure that you secure it also with flash units lever or tightening ring. [figure 18]

6. Installing a Wireless Receiver

Wireless receivers can be used to trigger the flash units. Some units will have a strap for hanging them on the hardware, outside the soft box on the LiteStand or in some cases they can slide onto the provided shoe mounts in front of the flash units. Install the front diffusion of your soft box and you are now ready to shoot!
